3 Keys to Discover Your True Self

One of the questions I believe we all will ask at some point in our lives is WHO AM I and WHAT WAS I CREATED TO DO? The desire to know who we are and live purposefully was put in us by God to lead us to his plans for our lives.

Whether child or adult, we all are on a journey to self-discovery. Sometimes we chase after things like fame, money, and human connections in an attempt to find our true identity and purpose but are left feeling dissatisfied, lost, and empty.

I've had my own experiences in chasing after things and people to find my identity and worth, and I can say that nothing truly satisfies until we are living according to how we were originally created to.

I don't know if you've ever seen any movies about clones. These clones are made to look, act and live like the originals but in reality, they are fake. It's the same way I believe that we can either choose to live a real life according to God's plan or a fake life designed by ourselves.

How To Know Your True Self

1. Plug-in
You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.~Psalm 139:16
Knowing your true self is a process that begins with having a connection with God. God created you. He knows your future and knows the you that nobody else does, including you. Truth is, we cannot truly live our best life while being disconnected from God.

As we come to know God, he reveals whom he has purposed for us to be, what he wants us to do, and where he wants us to go. I believe our lives would be less complicated in so many ways if lived according to God's plans.

It doesn't matter who you are or where you are in life, there is still so much room for growth in becoming who God has designed. Don't wear yourself out trying to figure things out alone. Connect and journey with God in discovering your true self.

2. Shut out the noise
In our journey to self-discovery, we will encounter many voices- I'm sure you already have. People will often try to tell you who you ought to be and what you should do. It's good to listen to others. What's not good is allowing others to lead you where God never intended for you to go.

When Adam and Eve sinned the first question God asked after they hid was "Who told you that you were naked?" see Genesis 3:11 They listened to the wrong voice and it cost them greatly. Maybe Eve thought that the serpent had good intentions, therefore obeying its voice rather than God.

The enemy still hides behind the voices of others to lead us away from God's original plan. So limit the voices you listen to, and shut out the noise. Let God's voice become the loudest in your life, he will lead you right where you need to be.

3. Be willing
Each one of us is a diamond in the rough. It takes our willingness to surrender to the careful hands of God, to see the transformation. I enjoy watching pottery videos. I marvel at how the potter can take clay(dirt) and sculpt it into something beautiful. We are the clay and the beautiful end result is what we get in return for trusting God with our lives.

Growth is costly. I wish I could tell you that becoming your true self would be easy, but I would be lying. At some point in your life, you must choose to let go. Let go of people, things, behaviors, and anything else that could hinder you from becoming. Surrendering the old you will make room for the new you to emerge.

Are you willing to trust God enough to let him mold you and lead you where he's designed? If you choose to trust him, he will surely exceed your expectations.

This week's scripture

"For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God" - Colossians 3:3

Affirmation

I am who God says I am. I will do what he says I will do, will have all he says I will have.
